I make art in my free time, creating abstract acrylic paintings as a way to process personal memories in the context of other peoples' powerful stories.
My painting practice is wholly intuitive, consisting of two phases - exertion and reflection. During the first step, I’m sitting on my studio floor quickly slathering paint on the canvas. That exertion empowers me to release pent up energy. After I’ve finally transferred the haze from my head to the painting surface, I slow down my spontaneous mark-making. Throughout the relative stillness of this second step of my practice, I relish the sensory experience of painting. I recall my experiences with a wise mind, stirring up those personal memories with stories I've heard.
Each finished piece is a dance between camouflage and exposure, and each painting's title is a snippet of something I've said or heard. Hopefully, my work encourages viewers to remember something from the past and apply that knowledge to their current state of being.
